Gatsby never goes out of style. The diamonds, pearls, frill, and lace are simply, timeless. The trends and styles were highly influenced by art movements in the 1920’s – Surrealism, Impressionism and Art Deco which conveyed the “modern” look. The Hollywood movies, the famous movie stars and the role of women changing and becoming more important, the rise in Consumerism and mass advertising during the 1920’s started this style revolution. Whether you are dressing up for prom, a formal event, or a costume party, this is the perfect guide to Gatsby accessories.
Cloche hats were huge during the 1920’s. They are perfect for the winter months, and can dress up your look even when you are going outside. Although they were big into hats back then, you can still find this style hat at almost any department store! If they have hats, they have this style.
The shoes they wore were not only simple and elegant, but designed strong for dancing the night away. Women most commonly wore a “t-strap” heel where the strap made a t-shape. This design helps the strap last longer because it is connected to the shoe in multiple spots. Their shoes also tended to have closed toes. Although most were plain colors, it was the only subtle thing about their outfits. Plus, the simple colors go with everything! You can find simple t-strap heels at dance stores. Although, I must say, I have had luck finding them at my local consignment stores for significantly cheaper.
One of the most well-known statements from the 1920’s was the perfect set of pearls that are still commonly worn today. Their pearls were typically long, with several layers to them. Pearls go with practically any color, which makes them perfect for those dresses that do not match certain necklaces and earrings!
The diamond necklaces they wore were BOLD. There were all different kinds of shapes and styles. If you are looking for a Gatsby diamond necklace, I highly recommend searching through the jewelry section in consignment and antique stores. The diamond necklaces they wore are more commonly referred to as “costume jewelry” in the 21st century. Your grandma might even have a necklace you could wear that she inherited from her relatives- as well as the earrings to match, of course.
Another huge staple item that is a must for your Gatsby look. In the 1920’s, they wore all kinds of different headbands. Some of them had intricate gems and diamonds, and some had feathers. It is all up to you on which kind of style you want to rock and what matches your dress! Almost any accessory’s store will have something close to the style. If you are wanting to be original, there are tons of videos on YouTube on how to create these headbands yourself. Some of the headbands were worn like a regular headband and some were worn across the headband, again it just depends on your preference. You might want to choose whichever is easiest with your hair style!
Gloves are next on the list! If you didn’t do your nails, do not worry, just throw on gloves! Normally worn in white or black, these are a popular item from the 1920’s. They are made out of a satin material and other hand accessories were worn on top. They are incredibly thin though, so do not rely on them to keep your hands completely warm!
A bracelet and ring all in one? Yes, it is true! Plus, it is absolutely stunning. I think this is my favorite accessory, which might be why I saved it for last. This might be harder to find than a necklace, but I am sure an antique store somewhere has them. Or the internet because what can’t be bought on the internet?! If you buy one with pearls and diamonds, it will match your necklace layers perfectly.
