Grandparents are like your second set of parents. They have always been there for you since the very beginning, and have always been around for every event of your life. Today is a very special day to honor your grandparents and to show your love and appreciation. You don’t have to run to the department store to purchase an expensive gift. Instead, create a small gift that is personalized and from the heart. Below you will find a list of crafty and unique DIY gift ideas that your grandparents will enjoy!
DIY Tile Photo Coasters
A Grandparent’s home is always beautifully decorated and instantly feels cozy upon walking inside. Tile photo coasters are a great DIY gift idea that your grandparents will proudly display inside their impeccably decorated home. They will proudly bring out these DIY tile photo coasters every time they have guests over. Photographs of yourself with your grandparents, your siblings, and your grandparents as a young couple are great photo options.

Here is what you need to get you started:
– 4X4” white tiles
– 4X4” photos
– Mod Podge
– Sponge brush
– Small felt, adhesive circles
– Clear acrylic spray
First, you must cut out each photograph to fit into the 4X4 tiles. If you don’t wish to struggle through cutting the photos to align perfectly, then print out 3.5X5 photos and trim them slightly. A smaller photo will give the coaster a “polaroid” look. If you wish to go with this option, make sure to leave 1” of the tile visible from the bottom and about ¼” visible from the sides and the top.
Next, take the sponge brush and add mod podge to the back of the photo. Place the photograph on tile and let dry for about 20 minutes. Then, take the sponge brush and add a thin layer of mod podge OVER the photograph. Make sure that the photo doesn’t shift while applying. You can use a credit card to smooth it down. Let completely dry (this step could take a couple of hours) and apply a second coat of mod podge.
Finally, once the tile is dry, spray the clear acrylic over the tile. Apply 4 small felt adhesive circles on the back (of each corner) of the tile . Once all of your photos are completely dry, stack them on top of each other and tie them with a ribbon.
DIY Sharpie Mugs
Grandma & Grandpa are always sipping on their favorite tea or coffee. Creating a personalized mug for each of them is a great gift that they will truly cherish. Instead of going on a website to order a personalized mug, opt for creating one yourself in your handwriting.
Here is what you need to get you started:
– White mug
– Oil-based sharpies
– Masking tape (optional)
First, you must hand wash the mug if it’s new. Next, draw your design directly on the mug with a pencil. This step is important, since you could easily erase if you make a mistake. Trace the design with the sharpies and fill in any drawings. You could use masking tape to help you create your design. Finally, bake the mug at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Let the mug completely cool.
DIY Baking Kit
Grandma is known for her delicious baking goods. Create a baking kit that she will absolutely love! This DIY kit does not require you to be extra crafty. Instead, compile ingredients into a cute box and you’re set! You can decorate the box yourself to make it even more personalized. What you can include in the box will depend upon the baked goods that your grandmother prefers.
Here is a list if your grandmother prefers to bake cupcakes:
– A decorated box
– Cupcake cups
– Icing bottle
– Recipe book (optional, since most grandma’s have their own secret recipes)
– Sprinkles, or her favorite toppings
DIY Snack Jars

Grandpa always love to snack. Create mason jars filled with his favorite treats! This gift is also a great way to get Grandpa to snack healthier. You don’t have to be extra crafty to create this DIY gift. Instead, purchase Grandad’s favorite snacks (or healthier options) and place inside cute jars.
Here is what you need:
– Jars with lids (2)
– Blackboard adhesive vinyl (for personalization)
– Grandpa’s favorite snacks (peanuts, jellybeans, etc)
*Note that you can purchase jars already with blackboard adhesive vinyl. However, if the jars you wish to purchase do not include the vinyl, then you could purchase the adhesive vinyl separately and stick on. Remember to write a cute message on the jars!
Celebrate Grandparents’ Day by spending time with Grandma and/or Grandpa. Take time to talk to them and ask them questions about their past, and how life was like when they were young. You will be entertained and even surprised at some of their stories! And, most importantly, tell them you love them and how much you appreciate them. Give them the gift as a small token of your appreciation, and they will truly cherish something that you have personalized yourself.
