Everyone seems to always be glued to their phone. People in restaurants don’t have face-to-face conversations anymore, and everyone rides the subway with their head down. It is safe to say that we are living in a Digital Age where technology is prominent. The days of passing notes in the middle of class are long gone – now all you have to do is send a quick text. A teenager will spend about 7.5 hours a day consuming media! These are hours wasted. At Faviana, we encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. Take advantage of these hours to try something new! For inspiration, we have compiled a list of activities to better spend your time.
Make a Bucket List
In your downtime, think about things you wish to accomplish in your lifetime. Have you always wanted to skydive? What country do you most want to visit? What about adopting a puppy from a shelter? Compile a list of these dreams in a notebook. You can also add photos or other memorabilia into a scrapbook. Once you complete each task, take a photo of your accomplishment. You will have a book full of amazing memories!
Take a Class
Have you always wanted to learn how to cook, or how to do makeup? Do you regret not taking a journalism class in college? Use your spare time to take a class at your local trade school or community college. Enrolling in a class is a great way to socialize with other students, and, most importantly, to network. You could possibly turn your new learned trade into a career! If you do what you love, you will never feel like you’ve worked a day in your life.
Take a Day Trip
Instead of laying on your couch and watching a 3-hour movie, you could take a day trip! Ask a friend or relative to explore places in your state you’ve never been to before. Take this opportunity to explore the history of your state and visit historical monuments. Find the best-selling food in a nearby city and make that a destination. Or be daring and visit a bordering state!
Take up a Hobby
In the days before the internet, people would entertain themselves by pursuing a hobby. Try baking for your family or planting flowers in your front yard. Sports are also a great way to spend your time, and get great exercise. Take time to go swimming or play basketball. If you love crafts, make a list of DIY projects you wish to make.
Reading is the best way to spend your spare time. Make a list of books you are interested in reading. If you’re unsure, start with the classics. Remember those books you never wanted to read in high school? Read them now so you won’t ever miss a literary reference. Go to your local library and ask them for suggested books for you to read. If you wish to read newer books, look into the New York Times best seller list. Not that many people are a fan of reading, but remember that knowledge is power!
Volunteering your time is a great way to give back to the community. Check out your local Boys and Girls Club or YMCA for available positions and projects. If you wish to find a volunteer program that’s best for you, go to volunteermatch.com for more options. You will feel great knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life through volunteering your time.

Everyone has a busy schedule, and there is always something to get done around the house. Compile a list of small and big projects that need to be accomplished in your home. It could be as easy as organizing your closet and throwing old things away, to bigger projects, such as painting the living room. Take a trip to IKEA for decorating inspiration and tips.
If you must pick up your phone, try brain games. These games are designed to make you think, which is a great way to exercise your brain. There are several free apps that you can try: Luminosity, 91 Logic Games, Left v. Right, and Brain Bomb. A great benefit of these apps is that you won’t feel like you’re working at all! The games are all entertaining.
Take a Walk
The best way to clear your head and to release some stress is to take a walk. In your free time, instead of hopping onto the couch with a bag of chips and Netflix, opt for a nice walk around your neighborhood. It’s also a great way to get some exercise. Walk without a destination in mind is a great way to just relax and enjoy the scenery around you.
We can’t live without technology, but we could always make better use of our time. Taking a break from your phone will relax your eyes and put your mind at ease. Remember that there is a whole world to explore outside of social media, so don’t live your life through someone else’s posts. Go out there and make memories yourself! And take great photos along the way. When you do get around to logging back onto social media, follow our blog’s Instagram @glamandgowns, and Faviana’s Instagram @Faviana_NY and Twitter @FavianaNY!
