How to Celebrate International Womens Day

International Womens Day became a global holiday for the last 15 years, celebrated on March 8th. International agencies all around the world come together to honor the social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women, while accelerating the gender as a whole.

2018’s campaign theme for International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress. There has never been a more important time to keep motivated and have the strong momentum for gender parity going. To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, everyone is encouraged to commit to Press for Progress. However, there’s so many more ways to show your support on this day and make a positive impact.

The easiest and most obvious way to celebrate International Women’s Day is to follow the campaign theme. It may seem like just yourself won’t make a difference, but every commitment will assist with accelerating gender parity each day. Right on their website, you are asked to select an area that you specifically want to concentrate on to press for progress, based on your own sphere of influence. After filling out other minor details and clicking “submit,” you have successfully committed to #PressforProgress. You can join the movement for yourself here.

International Women’s Day is all about women helping women. Therefore, you can support women and be there for them in many ways. Mentor other women and men you may know, teaching them about this day and building numbers. Speak out against violence and injustice against women everywhere, sharing your own personal stories. If you love to travel, then volunteer with women in other countries to better understand global women’s issues. In your own neighborhood, you can start your own Sister Circle, join a global sisterhood movement, partner with other women’s groups, or donate to established gender organizations. As you can see, the possibilities are endless!

Another way to celebrate is getting others to celebrate! Use #PressforProgress in your social media posts on March 8th and throughout the rest of the year. Not only can you spread the word of the holiday yourself, but there’s a variety of resources on the International Women’s Day 2018 website to assist. Here you can submit your own events, publish a page, read International Women’s Day news from across the world, watch International Women’s Day videos, and share them as an inspiring resource for others.

We need to realize and recognize that women have more in common than differences. No matter what background we come from, it’s never too late to embrace the diversity in place and unite our sisterhood around the world.
