How to Volunteer and Get Involved

How to volunteer? Where can I volunteer? These are all questions that you may ask yourself when thinking about giving back. Volunteering is about serving those in need, but don’t forget about the benefits that can come with it. Meeting new people, learning, and adding the work to a resume are all benefits that can come from volunteering. No matter how small or large the task, helping others in need leaves a lasting positive impact in your community and in yourself.

So, how do you get involved? There are many different organizations and opportunities, find the one that suits you:

Raise a Service Dog

Raise a puppy and change a life. Once raised, these dogs help their owners do daily tasks that he or she is incapable of, such as getting dressed or crossing the street. Service dogs aid individuals who may have physical disabilities. Even sick children and helping children learn who have disabilities like autism are helped by service dogs! There are numerous organizations which host the training! Here are some:

Volunteer with Animals

Calaveras County Human Resources

Animals are constantly being dropped off at shelters and need the love and care of human touch. By volunteering at a shelter, you are increasing the chances of an animal being adopted. The happier and more sociable an animal is, the more he or she appeals to an adoptive family. Not only does the animal benefit and live a happier life, you can too! You will gain experience from any task you do, ranging from answering phone calls to scheduling appointments with potential adopters.

Donate Clothes

Do you have a closet full of clothes you don’t wear? We all do! Why not donate them to someone in need? Take the clothing to your local consignment shop, like Goodwill, or local church! You can even drop the clothes off at a women’s shelter! Don’t have time to drive anywhere? Schedule a pickup from Purple Heart.

Brightening Birthdays

The Players Trust

Bring the fun of birthdays to homeless children across the country! Brightening Birthdays allows the chance for homeless children to experience the celebration of having a birthday. Volunteers of America takes volunteers and donations to throw these children a party with their families. So far, VOA has held more than 250 parties!

Any Soldier

Are you interested in supporting our troops? Possibly with a care package or card? Sure, you may not know what to send, but Any Soldier connects you with military units whose soldiers don’t get much mail. The volunteers in the organization will let you know what kind of supplies are needed, snacks, books, toys.

Pick up Litter

Did you know that in 2006, every person in the U.S created 4.6 pounds of waste every day? Today, many people are aware of the dangers from pollution like climate change, but just being aware does not help solve the issue. Going around your community and picking up litter is a great way to do your part!

Do Something

If none of the above fit your likings or scheduling, try DoSomething.org! Do Something is an organization that takes into consideration your availability, passions, and the types of services you want to participate in. This is a great way to take on volunteering online and off!
