The best thing to do when you are stressed out is to focus all of that negative energy and put it into something else. Try to take your mind off the things that are bothering you by centralizing your thoughts on activities to distract yourself. Often, we tend to shut down when we are stressed and bottle ourselves up, but there are better ways to handle this. Check out some of our tips below on how to relieve your stress!

Journaling

One of my favorite stress relievers is writing all of my feelings down in a journal. There is something about seeing my thoughts written down on paper coming to life that makes me feel more at ease. It’s almost like they become more real. This helps me to focus on what is really important and what is truly bothering me. Also, by journaling, you can always go back and see what you need to do and use it as a reference for the future. All of these aspects of journaling will take the pressure off of you when you are stressed because once it’s down on paper, you can get it off your mind and reflect back on it.

Tip: Journaling is a judgement- free zone where you cannot be criticized, so be sure not to hold back on anything that is bothering you. 

Puzzles

Puzzles come in all different types such as crosswords, word searches, jigsaws, and so on. They are peaceful activities that stimulate your brain and keep your attention and mind off of the current stressors in your life. I don’t know about you, but I cannot just walk away from a puzzle. Once I start one, I need to finish it and by the time I know it, I have forgotten all about what was bothering me. You become so captivated by completing the puzzle that you totally forget everything else. Not only do they distract you from the outside world, but they also provide other benefits such as exercising mental skills, deflecting dementia, and much more.

Go For a Walk

Brisk, fresh air paired with a nice long walk is the perfect way to relieve stress. You may not know it, but your brain goes into a meditative state when you are on a walk. It shifts your brain into a calmer state especially when walking around beautiful scenery. Also, just being outside reduces stress because nature is calming and relaxing. There are many health benefits to going for a walk as well. For instance, walking boosts endorphins, which alleviates stress hormones, which improves your mood and self-esteem. So when you are feeling stressed, simply slip on a pair of comfortable shoes and head outside to clear your mind.
