An invitation arrived in the mail! You rip it open to find that you’re invited to yet another fabulous event. You read it through and realize you have no idea what “white tie attire” or “creative black tie” means. We’re here to help you decode what each event attire really means! Dress code confusion will now be a thing of the past – this is the ultimate event dress code guide.
White Tie Event Dress Code
It doesn’t get more formal than this! Getting invited to a white tie event is when you know you have made it – think Oscars, Met Gala, and State Dinner. If it’s white tie attire, it is a very important and fabulous event. This dress code calls for long, formal gowns. Wear dramatic and glamorous make up and jewelry – these events only come around every so often – so go all out!
Black Tie Event
A black tie event is not as formal as white tie, but a lot more common and still very dressy. If you were invited to a wedding with this on the invitation, it typically means the wedding is an evening event and you should wear a long dress or a fancier cocktail dress in a dark or neutral color. You can still accessorize with statement jewelry to give your look the wow-factor!
Black Tie Optional
Black tie optional can be a bit confusing. It’s slightly less formal than black tie. You can still wear a long dress, but it is also more appropriate to wear a cocktail dress than it would be if it were just black tie attire. Black tie optional gives you the opportunity to have more fun by adding the low V-neck and high leg cutout to your gown. Add a pair of statement earrings and you’re set for your event!
Creative Black Tie
This is a fun one! Creative black tie is black tie attire with some flare. Sometimes it means going with the theme of the event. If it’s country themed, add cowboy boots to your dress. If it’s Great Gatsby themed, add some beaded necklaces. If it’s not themed, it just means to have more fun with your look! Show off your unique sense of style while also looking nice for the event by adding fun accessories or a different colored dress.
Cocktail Event Dress Code
Cocktail means you’re ready to party! Go for a short dress in a bright color or a little black dress with fun accessories. Wear heels for the occasion, as well. Your attire can be fun and flirty, looking amazing with a wrist cuff and fun earrings. There’s any array of colors and styles for short dresses, so find one that fits your body and personality best!
Festive Event Dress Code
This is basically cocktail attire meant for holiday parties. You can wear a cocktail dress or nice pants or skirt with a shirt. Add a holiday twist with sequins or shiny colors for the season to really get in the spirit! Red and greens are your best friends here to surely standout.
Beach Formal Dress
A beach formal probably means a beach wedding. You’ll want to wear a fun or floral sundress that is appropriate for both the event and the environment. Also, consider open toed shoes that you will be able to walk in the sand in! We suggest bright colors and a chiffon material since it’s fun and flowy for the beach. Pair this frock with wedges or flat sandals, whichever you are most comfortable in.
This one can be confusing, as it’s somewhere between cocktail and casual. You should stick to a cocktail dress, a skirt and blouse, or even nice pants and top. We enjoy a short dress for a dressy casual event. Find a fabric that doesn’t make it too fancy, but still has details so it isn’t too casual. Keep your jewelry minimal and you’re ready to go!
