Tricks for Mastering Winged Eyeliner

2017.10.28

Whether it’s for your Halloween makeup or an outing event, we all want to achieve the perfect winged eyeliner. It looks easy to accomplish, but when it comes time to do it, it never seems to come out right. Therefore, we uncovered the makeup tricks for doing winged eyeliner that will make the process a whole lot easier and quicker!

Trick #1 for Winged Eyeliner: Straight Edge

If you have trouble creating and matching your wings, then use a straight edge to help you. You can use a trusty desk staple such as a post-it or tape, or even a business card. If you choose an adhesive, simply place it from the outer corner of your eye to the eyebrow. This will help you direct the flick, and create a guide for you to follow to make sure they’re even on each side. Additionally, you will only draw the line where you need to, not having it accidentally spill over in another area of skin. The same goes with using a small piece of paper or business card, holding it in place instead for the same effect. Simply remove the object when you’re done, and you’re left with the perfect winged eyeliner.

Trick #2: The Spoon

A spoon is another object and trick you can easily use. Grab a spoon from your kitchen, and let it do its magic. Use the handle to make your first line, then flip it over and use the rounded piece to make the other side of the wing. When you’re done, all you have to do is fill in the area – it’s that easy! Plus, if you use a cold spoon, you will also be reducing the puffiness of your eyes at the same time. How’s that for a soothing trick?

Trick #3: Trace It

If the above tricks don’t work for you or you simply don’t have a steady head, there are still other options. In order to create a cat eye, you can simplify it into smaller steps on your own. Start by perfecting the flick at the end. Then, do a really thin line over the tear duct at the inner corners, connecting it to the wing at the end. Finally, fill in your winged outline. Here you’re tracing your eye and creating your own design. Another method is using a soft brown liner to trace the wing before committing to the black liner. First draw the shape you want with a pencil, then perfect the shape with minimal risk with your black eyeliner. When all else fails, you can opt for cat eye stencils or stamps that are super easy to use, too!

Trick #4: Avoid Makeup Remover

Let’s say you mess up your winged eyeliner. Your first instinct is usually to grab makeup remover. Nonetheless, you then risk getting remover everywhere, including where you didn’t mess up. Plus, the oil from the makeup remover will cause the liner to drag even more. In order to correct mistakes and polish up the shape of your wing, use a small brush and makeup primer instead. This smooths out the edges and erases your mistakes, without erasing the rest of your hard work. It also helps your makeup last all day!
