How to Protect Your Skin From The Sun

2018.05.10

We know how to prep our skin for an event, but what about how to protect your skin from the sun? Summertime is the best time since we get to engage in activities outside. However, with harsher sunlight and UV rays, it also can be very damaging to our skin. To be prepared so you can still continue your fun, we show you exactly how to protect your skin from the sun this season!

Protect Your Skin With Sunscreen

This seems like a no-brainer, but many people skip this step. Sunscreen is your first protector from the sun, so be sure to use it every day. This should be at least one ounce, applied 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Make sure you purchase a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation, with an SPF of 30 or higher. This will protect you from getting sunburned and prevent the effects of skin cancer. It’s also smart to use a water-resistant one and reapply frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.

Use Other SPF Cosmetics

If you want a natural tan, then you’re going to need to use other cosmetics on your face. Stick to moisturizers, bronzers, and foundations that all have an SPF of 30 or higher. This will allow you to still wear a fresh face of makeup outside, all while protecting your skin. In addition to your face, you should also invest in a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with a sun protection factor. This is part of your skin, too!

Wear Sun-Protective Accessories

You can actually look really glamorous by wearing more clothing or accessories while out. For example, don’t be ashamed to wear a long-sleeved shirt, long-sleeved one-piece, or long pants that are light in weight. Dark clothing with tightly woven fabric also blocks more sun than white or loosely woven fabrics. For additional protection, you can look for clothes made with special sun-protective materials. In addition, you should always pair your outfit with a classic hat. One with a large brim protects your scalp all the way around, along with shading your face, neck, and the tops of your ears. Finally, wear your favorite sunglasses with lenses that have 99% to 100% UV absorption. This provides optimal protection for the eyes and the skin surrounding it!

Be Aware of Your Time & Body

Many people tend to forget about this. Time flies when you’re having fun outside, but you should try to limit your time in the sun when you can. This is crucial between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when the sun’s rays are the most intense. A good method to follow is the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and you should find shade. Furthermore, many medications are more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to check before the sun does more damage to your body.
