How to Celebrate International Day of the Girl

Let’s celebrate International Day of the Girl!

October 11th marks the 7th annual International Day of the Girl, initiated by the United Nations to bring awareness to the trials and tribulations faced globally by girls, as well as to celebrate inspirational females around the world. Check out how you can help show your support and celebrate International Day of the Girl!

Declared by the United Nations in 2011, International Day of the Girl was created with the aim to “highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face,” while promoting the empowerment and human rights of the 1.1 billion adolescents currently living. With the right support, females have the power to change the world for the better, “both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders.”

Post on Social Media to Celebrate International Day of the Girl

There’s no easier way to show your support than with an ever-popular social media post. Have a #GirlHero you want to shout out? Post a photo with her on Instagram a la Priyanka Chopra, who chose to celebrate International Day of the Girl by dedicating a post to her mother in 2017.

Can’t choose one person? No problem – post a selfie and tag ALL of your #GirlHero’s, and challenge them to do the same!

For those who aren’t Instagram-obsessed, test your knowledge on the 1.1 billion girls living around the world today by taking the United Nations Girl Child Quiz. Share the quiz on Facebook or Twitter and encourage other’s to complete the quiz as well. The best way to help and show support is to educate!

A term coined by the Spice Girls, “Girl Power” has evolved into a full-blown movement. Fed up with the treatment and abuse girls face on a daily basis, Henriette Ernst wanted to do her part to help make a change. Guided by her passion to “create something driven by values,” Ernst established her apparel company, Round + Square. 30% of the company’s sales goes to Equality Now, an organization that seeks legal change to aid in the advancement of women’s and girls rights. As they say on their site, “when women and girls, men and boys are treated equally, everyone wins.”

Translating to “Queen” in the Yoruba language, Olari “symbolizes every girl’s inherent worth and power.” Working with artisans and women-owned businesses to preserve the “unique craftsmanship and regain influence in a woman-driven industry,” every product sold by Olari goes toward tuition fees for underprivileged girls in Africa.

If you prefer a more hands-on approach to celebrate International Day of the Girl, there are plenty of opportunities to help out in your own community! Interested in mentoring a young girl in need of guidance or a person to talk to? I AM THAT GIRL, founded in 2008 by best friends Alexis Jones and Emily Greener, is a non-profit organization which aims to provide adolescent girls with a safe space to have “honest conversations about things that matter.” Celebrities like Amanda Seyfried, Sophia Bush, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Rachel Platten have all been involved with the organization.
