Faviana’s Guide To A Sustainable Wedding

2016.06.08

Sustainability has become an important issue in today’s world. Many people are starting to make small changes to help the Earth in a large way. Most people do this every day with every action, however many forget about the waste they produce on special days as well! Let’s make a change.

There are 2.5 million weddings a year in the United States. The average cost couples will spend on their special day is $26,444 and create more than 62 tons of carbon dioxide and 400-600 pounds of garbage. Having a green wedding won’t only impact the health of our earth, but it will save you a pretty penny on your big day.

Check out a few of these green ideas to not only have a beautiful and unique wedding, but also help keep our earth clean and beautiful.

Location

Pick a location that is central to the majority of your guests. This will decrease the amount of pollution that will be exhausted with your guests traveling. Also, when deciding to not have a destination wedding and staying local, you can help your local economy by putting money back into the community where you live.

Jewelry

The average American will spend $4,000 on an engagement ring and another $500-$1,000 on the wedding ring. This is giving the jewelry industry, an industry that isn’t eco-friendly, $16 billion a year. Purchasing a vintage, antique, or hand crafted will decrease the number and make an impact. You will also be getting a unique ring no one else has!

Invitations

We all know that there are so many expenses waste that comes with invitations, save the dates, place cards, and menus. A fun technologically savvy way to keep costs down, be eco-friendly, and still keep things chic is to create a website for your wedding. Send out the save the dates, add the URL of the new website and as things process, add the address, menu, seating arrangements, and itinerary. Your guests will appreciate the convenience of one place to go for all the information they need.

Flowers

More than half of florists in the U.S. use chemicals to preserve the flowers. Make sure to research florists for your bridal bouquet before you decide. Look into a nontraditional floral arrangement such as fragrant herbs or faux flowers which can last a lifetime! This will give the wedding decor an eccentric style while still being eco-friendly.

Wedding Favors

There are many ideas that go into an eco-friendly wedding favor but a few of our favorites are reusable mason tumbler cup, grow your own plant, teacup soy candle. These are a great way to keep the waste down while having gifts that everyone will love to use, rather than throwing them right away.

Food and Beverages

When creating your menu try to stay with a local catering option. Usually when ordering your food for the wedding, the average American’s meal will travel 1,500 miles! Deciding to go local and organic will decrease your meals carbon footprint while stimulating local economy.
