That is why we decided to create a weekly series in which we showcase all the best that New York City has to offer. Whether you live in the city or want to visit sometime, we hope our list of the best things to do in some of the most exciting neighborhoods and boroughs gives you plenty of options to have fun and new adventures. Today, we are talking about what to do in Midtown Manhattan.
Midtown, Manhattan
If New York City is the center of the world, then Midtown is the center of New York City. This borough can feel like too much at times, packed with shops, restaurants, offices, and all kind of businesses and tourist attractions, which might make some New Yorkers weary of spending too much time here. However, we believe that there are plenty of cool things to do and have fun in Midtown (and no, we are not only saying it because our offices are here…) if you only care to look. So here is our guide for the best day in Midtown.
Museum of Modern Art
There is a reason why the MoMA is one of the most famous art museums in the world, and having it at our footsteps never fails to amaze us. Their art collection is unprecedented— we are talking about Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans, Mattise’s Dance (I), Monet’s Water Lilies and a whole room dedicated to Giorgio De Chirico— all in the same building.
What’s even more, their sculpture garden is absolutely lovely, one of the few places you can find peace and quiet in hectic Midtown. I would even suggest packing a light snack to enjoy in the garden, or if you want to splurge, having an early lunch in the museum’s restaurant, The Modern. Be sure to get there early to take your time strolling through the floors and staring at your favorite artworks.
Bryant Park
After spending most of your morning and a little bit of your afternoon at the MoMA, we think now is the perfect moment to head to Bryant Park. Lay down, enjoy the sun and a picnic, or one of the many planned activities that are always going on in the park — from ice skating, games of chess, backgammon, Monopoly, Scrabble and Ping Pong tournaments. You can even take a ride on the carousel, pick a book from the Reading Room, and attend a free drawing or foreign language class.
The New York Public Library
After, you should stop by the New York Public Library (it is right next to Bryant Park) and marvel at just how spectacular it is. The Map Room and The Rose Main Reading Room are some of the most marvelous spaces in the world to get lost in a book— or to simply do some homework and research.
Times Square & Broadway
Although Times Square has a bad reputation with most New Yorkers (“too many people!”) we think that it’s worth going to this mostly-tourist destination during the late night, when the incandescent lights from billboards are more notorious and everything looks just a little bit more impressive.
The Broadway theater scene really is as amazing as people make it out to be— if you like live shows or musicals, you really need to see a Broadway production. For cheaper play tickets, check the TKTS booth. Every day the put out discounted tickets to some of the most famous Broadway shows, and even though the lines are quite long the wait isn’t usually that terrible. Once you score your tickets, take a seat (and some pictures!) at the red stairs just over the TKTS booth and take a moment to engage in some people-gazing, marveling in just how big and diverse this city truly is. After, well, enjoy your play!
