“It Happened on Fifth Avenue” (1947)
This is my all time favorite Christmas movie. It has such a heartwarming and loving storyline that will leave you smiling and ready for the holidays. It starts off with Aloysius T. McKeever, a homeless man in NYC, who makes a boarded up fifth avenue mansion his new home when the millionaire, Michael J. O’Connor, winters in the south. McKeever invites his friend Jim who has been evicted from his apartment and Judy who ran away and is actually O’Connor’s daughter, but doesn’t tell anyone. Long story short, Jim and Judy fall in love and O’Connor comes home to find all of these strangers in his house. Judy convinces her dad to become “Mike” and stay in the house with them as well. O’Connor (Mike) does not approve of her lover Jim, so he offers him a job in Bolivia to get him away from her. Jim accepts because O’Connor outbid him on the camp he wanted to buy, but in the end, O’Connor opens his heart and gives Jim the camp as long as he doesn’t reveal to McKeever that he was Mike.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)
This is one of the most well-loved Christmas movies of all time. It captures the holiday spirit while delivering warmth all year long. So let’s jump right into it. George Bailey looks at himself as a failure and is contemplating suicide because he is facing financial ruin and arrest. Luckily, George gets sent an angel named Clarence Oddbody, who is hoping to teach him how different life would have been if he had never been born. During this voyage, George realizes how many lives he has touched and helped throughout his life. Once George awakens, he understands that he has had a wonderful life despite all of his dilemmas.
“Holiday Inn” (1942)
This is one of the most enjoyable and heartfelt musical you will watch this holiday season. Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire pair together for the first time and completely steal the show. Now, the movie starts off with Jim Hardy, Lila Dixon and Ted Hanover, who are a popular trio in New York, where they sing and dance. Jim plans to move to Connecticut, become a farmer, and marry Lila, but Lila also loves Ted and wants to remain in the spotlight. Lila and Ted get to stay together and become a duo. After a year, Jim decides the farming life is not for him, but still enjoys the country life. He then realizes he can maintain the farm, but also open an inn. Jim calls it the Holiday Inn, where it would feature holiday themed dinner shows. Things are going well until Ted comes back into Jim’s life and stirs up some problems.
