We’ve all become obsessed with highlighter, wanting it to show intensely when you go out during the day or night. However, many of us are unaware how to achieve the perfect glow and properly apply highlighter to our face. Here we broke it down for you on how to highlight effortlessly for all your holiday parties!
How to Highlight: Choose Wisely
Highlighters come in a variety of forms and aren’t all created equally. Therefore, it’s essential to choose the right highlighter for you and your skin. Cream and liquid highlighters are great if you have dry skin, for it will not make it look flaky or emphasize the dryness already there. On the other hand, powder is best for combination to oily skin, providing a more subtle glow. It’s also essential to pick the perfect highlight color out of the many choices there are. Each color gives off a different effect, thus it’s crucial to pick the right one to achieve the perfect glow. Champagne and bisque tone highlighters are universally flattering, while peach and pink toned ones add a more radiant look. You mainly want to complement your skin’s undertone, which may be cool, neutral, or warm.
How to Highlight: Know Location & Tools
Before applying the highlighter, you need to know where and how to put it on. The highest points of the face are the best for highlighter. This includes the center of your forehead, brow bone, center of the nose bridge, cheeks, and cupid’s bow. If you’re unfamiliar with these areas, you can just swipe on your highlighter in a sideways “V formation” that goes from your temple to the cheekbone. This is an easy way to highlight your cheeks without mapping out your entire face with product.
Powder can then be applied here by using a small, fluffy brush or fan brush. These ensure you are hitting the right spots and concentrating on the small areas. Liquid highlighters are a different story, since they’re harder to apply with a brush. If you decide to use this form, you want to use a sponge to buff the highlighter into the skin and then sheer it out. No matter if it’s cream, powder, liquid, or gel though, blending your highlighter with your fingers will always bring out the brightest results.
How to Highlight: Apply in Moderation
After you apply your foundation, it’s tempting to use a lot of highlighter and lose control. You only really need a little bit, such as a single dab, for each part that you want to highlight. It’s better to put on a little bit at a time since you can always add more, compared to when you go all out and find out later that you put on too much. It’s also important to blend it in until it looks natural. You don’t want a harsh streak of highlighter anywhere on your face, for that would stand out too much. Blending until it looks like you’re visibly glowing is the key to pulling it off and getting the perfect glow. If you do go highlighter-happy, it’s easy to tone down by using contour powder to counteract the shine.
