We all love being tan and want to keep our bronze looking fresh into the fall season. You can always opt for a fake tan, but luckily there are other ways to keep your skin glowing. Follow these tips and tools on how to preserve your tan after summer is over!
Exfoliate To Preserve Your Tan
Hear us out first before you doubt this step. It’s crucial to gently exfoliate dead skin cells before and after you tan to ensure your skin is smooth and that your skin cells are at the very start of their cycle. This allows your skin to receive the proper sunscreen and vitamin D, while stimulating blood flow to help remove toxins. Dead skin cells actually make your skin look duller, which we don’t want. By removing the dead skin with a scrub or dry brush, you’re allowing your skin to breath, regenerate properly, and stimulate the production of melanin (the pigment that makes you look tan!). Just be sure to avoid exfoliators with glycerol acid or salicylic acid, hair removal lotions, and waxing, for these will cause your tan to fade quicker.
Moisturize Excessively
If there’s one thing you need to do, it’s this. You can never moisturize too much, so keep reapplying throughout the day and keep your skin feeling soft. Any amount of time in the sun causes your skin to dry out, and once you start peeling, it’s game over. We suggest using lotions that are especially made for after sun care or contain a bronzing agent to help preserve your tan. The nutrients in these products will speed up skin recovery and have calming, soothing, and healing ingredients. A body oil can also be used to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier that will keep the hydrating ingredients in your skin.
Take Cold Showers
This one might sound odd, but it works! Long, hot showers and baths actually dehydrate your skin, which leads to faster flaking and peeling. We’re not saying to stand under ice water, but you should stick to cool or warm water instead. The colder temperature closes your pores to keep your tan and moisture locked. We suggest using a hydrating shower cream or oil as well while you’re at it. This moisturizing body wash will assist your skin with staying hydrated and trapping the water from the shower.
Drink Lots of Water
To prevent your skin from drying out and flaking, water is going to be your best friend. You can only moisturize your skin so much on the outside, so it’s going to need an extra hand on the inside. To ensure cells stay hydrated, you need to feed them what they need. This means keeping up your water intake and staying hydrated for good skin health. You already lose more water from the sun and sweating, so replenish your cells to keep a radiant, golden glow.
