How to properly clean your makeup brushes

We all may know how to apply makeup and make our makeup last, but many of us don’t know how to properly clean the tools we use. Washing your makeup brushes should be a part of your regular beauty routine, cleaning them at least once a week. This is because bits of dirty, oil, bacteria, and makeup get trapped in the bristles, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Especially if your brushes are expensive and of great quality, you want to get the most out of them. Here we show you the easiest ways to clean your makeup brushes to protect your investment and skin!

Cleaning your makeup brushes can be quick and easy, using resources right in front of you. Begin by running your brushes under warm water, focusing on the bristles and not the handles. Then fill a small bowl with warm water and add a squirt of hand soap, dish soap, or gentle shampoo. Swirl the brush tip in the water, against the bowl, and even in the palm of your hand to lather it up. Next, rinse the brush tip under water once again, repeating the steps until the water runs clear. Use a cloth to wipe the brush clean and reshape the bristles. Finally, lay your brushes flat on a cloth to dry for a few hours, and you’re set!

If using your hands or a bowl isn’t enough for your deep cleaning, there’s another option. You can use any ribbed surface you have laying around, such as an unused sponge, or creating your own with a hot glue gun and clipboard. If you’re not feeling artistic, you can always purchase the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove or the Real Techniques Brush Cleansing Palette. All of these options have rough patches to really wash away the grime in the grooves of your brushes. Just remember to wash the surface you use after each time, too, to prevent bacteria from building up.

For those of you who don’t want to use regular soap, there are specially-formulated brush shampoos on the market that you can purchase. Makeup brush cleansing balms, such as Japonesque Solid Brush Cleaner, takes your shampoo to the next level. They generally contain a mix of oils and special ingredients, lathering lightly when you rub your brushes against it. Choose to do this with a bowl, your hand, or a ribbed surface. No matter what, the results from these are clean, soft, and conditioned brushes.

Clean Your Makeup Brushes with a Washing Machine

For those beauty gurus who are serious about cleaning their makeup brushes, you can opt for this fancy approach. There’s many hi-tech, brush-cleaning machines out there that get the job done quickly and efficiently. One example is the Lilumia brush-washing machine. You can insert up to six small brushes into the slots of the appliance, pointing downward. Then close the lid, turn it on, and that’s it! The machine moves the bristles back and forth in the soap, drains, and does two rinse cycles. Just be careful since many can be loud, bulky, or expensive.
