It’s officially May, which means later this month the long anticipated wedding of the year is almost here! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be tying the knot on May 19th at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. As women, young girls, and everyone in between wait excitedly to see her wedding dress, we decided what better time to remember and pay tribute to the three iconic royal wedding dresses before her. Kate Middleton, Diana, and of course, Queen Elizabeth II wore timeless wedding gowns at their weddings. Let’s all enjoy this trip down memory lane with these royal wedding dresses of the past!
Kate Middleton Royal Wedding Dress
Kate Middleton’s Alexendar McQueen wedding gown was designed in collaboration with Sarah Burton. Kate really wanted her gown to resemble her modern style, while incorporating royal tradition. Her gown was a mix of white and ivory fabrics, lace detailing, and her iconic long sleeves that paid tribute to tradition. Let’s not forget the Cartier halo tiara Queen Elizabeth lent Kate to where, who was gifted it on her 18th birthday. The lace tied into her train that was over 8 feet long created a timeless gown we all couldn’t stop thinking about.
Princess Diana Royal Wedding Dress
Princess Diana, a woman who we all adored and still marvel at, had nothing less than the ultimate princess moment at her wedding. Diana’s dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel. The Alexander McQueen ivory taffeta gown was embroidered with sequins, lace, and 10,000 pearls. Her gown’s train reached 25 feet, but her iconic 153 yard tulle-veil overlaying her train had everyone’s attention. Paired with silk, slip-on heels that took over 6 months to make, Diana’s grand entrance on her big day was one that made us all stop and gasp. We too were in love!
Queen Elizabeth’s II Royal Wedding Gown
Let’s go back to 1947, two years after WWII when the whole world gathered for a fairytale wedding. Queen Elizabeth’s II wedding gown was designed three months prior to her big day. The dress designed by Norman Hartnell, whose goal was to create “the most beautiful dress I had so far made,” was definitely nothing short of just that: beautiful. The gown was made from ivory silk and decorated with 10,000 seed pearls. Her 15 foot train was covered in floral designs. She had a silk tulle-veil and embellished satin heels to bring the look together. Her gown was iconic and an inspiration for all brides in the years to come.
Which royal wedding dress will Meghan wear on her big day? We can speculate there might be some lace, pearls, and a train only a princess is deserving of.
