UPDATED June 2019 — How to Effectively Cleanse Before Prom

2019.06.12

Everyone wants to look and feel great for prom, but “quick fix” diets are never a good idea. Carb-free diets, liquid diets, all-vegetable diets, and plans that drastically cut daily calorie intake all promise quick and easy results, but in fact, these diets are dangerous and can prove to be ineffective. Metabolic damage, low energy, binge eating and even eventual weight gain are side effects that those promoting these diets will not warn you about. To effectively cleanse for prom, natural detoxing, clean eating and hydration is the way. Keep reading for our tips on how to healthily cleanse during the weeks leading up to prom.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, cleanse means “to rid of impurities by or as if by washing.” So technically, a cleanse can be as simple as eating very well for a set period of time. The best way to look and feel your best on prom night is to eat clean for three weeks or so before. We recommend cutting out pre-packaged, processed foods and instead, fill your diet with whole foods like fruits, vegetables, hormone-free meats, greek yogurt, nuts, sweet potatoes, brown rice, etc. If you’re looking to go the extra mile, you could try cutting out meat, dairy, added sugars or gluten. Depending on your body’s chemistry, giving up one or more of these could leave you feeling phenomenal. If you need any extra motivation, Beyoncé swears by Veganism when she’s in need of a detox.

Sweat it Out

Another great way to cleanse your body is to take advantage of its natural detox method: sweating. When we sweat, we get rid of toxins, which is one of many reasons that exercising is so darn good for us. If you’re unsure about your strength or endurance, eating well can actually improve your performance. Also, it doesn’t take much to get your heart pumping and your body sweating. A few minutes on a stair-stepper or walking briskly on an incline will prove it, trust us. For added detoxification, indulging in a sauna or steam room session will leave you feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

Hydration is Key

We probably don’t have to tell you that staying hydrated is important, but drinking plenty of water will work wonders for your body. Proper hydration will perfect your complexion, reduce cravings, make workouts easier, and of course, flush toxins out of your system. Though there has been debate among experts as to exactly how much water you should drink per day, a simple way to calculate an intake goal is by dividing your weight (in pounds) in half and consuming that much water (in ounces) daily. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, then you should drink at least 70 ounces of water per day. Keep in mind, if you’re exercising regularly, you should drink a little more to make up for the sweat sessions!

Luckily, there are tons of different ways to hydrate. Sip on herbal teas, try out kombucha or make yourself a bottle of infused water, and before you know it, you’ll never want to leave your house without a bottle of water in hand. Check out our recipe for delicious lemon and mint infused water below!

Step 1:  Search for a large jar or water bottle.

Step 2:  Add 4-5 slices of lemon.

Step 3: Add 5-7 leaves of fresh mint.

Step 4: Add water. (Adding carbonated water can make for a yummy soda replacement!)

Step 5: Place the drink in the refrigerator overnight to allow the ingredients to properly infuse.

Try your hand at a pre-prom cleanse and see just how great you can feel. Above all, make sure you’re treating your body well.
