Go Dark

If this is the first time you are dying your own hair at home, start with a shade that doesn’t require bleaching your hair first. A darker shade can be a great way to ease into the hair-coloring game while you gain some experience and start taking bolder approaches with your hair. Also, if you have very long or thick hair buy two boxes since you don’t want to run out of dye in the middle of the application. If you don’t need if after all, save it for the next time you need a touch-up!

Clean it Well

To make sure that your color comes out as exactly how you want it, first take a shower and use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any and all residues in your hair. This way, the dye will really take to your hair. Make sure you don’t use conditioner before applying the dye so the color turns out really bright and strong.

Test First

Make sure the color you chose is the actual color you want in your entire head by testing it on a small portion of your hair first. Apply the dye to a small section of your hair and see if you want to move forward. Patch-testing will also reveal if your scalp is sensitive to the formula, you have any allergies, or simply if you don’t want to dye your hair after all!

Be Prepared

You should have a few things before you start. First, put on a shirt that you don’t mind ruining or better yet, an old towel. Always wear disposable latex gloves to prevent stained hands and any accidental chemical absorption into your bloodstream. You could also swipe some petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) along your hairline to prevent skin stains on your forehead and neck. Make sure you have a wide tooth comb and a fine tooth comb to evenly distribute the dye over your hair, especially if it’s very long.
