Surprisingly, most people are self-conscious about their smile both in person and in pictures. There are many teeth whitening products out there, but most are expensive or contain harsh chemicals. Luckily, there are natural ingredients and remedies you can make right in your home to achieve the same results. Here are the best natural ways to whiten your teeth!
Coconut Oil Pulling
Oil pulling was traditionally done by Indians by using sunflower or sesame oil. Today, coconut oil is used because of its pleasant taste, health benefits, and teeth whitening power! The oil is high in lauric acid, which is known for reducing inflammation, killing bacteria, and removing plaque on the teeth. This is what causes our teeth to look yellow, as it protects and cleans the gums, as well as preventing gingivitis. To practice oil pulling, simply put a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth or on your toothbrush. You should swish or brush the oil around for 5-20 minutes, then spit out the excess when done.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching and antibacterial agent, killing bacteria on wounds and in your mouth. This is definitely a stronger solution, so make sure to dilute it with plenty of water before use. Strong concentrations or overuse can cause gum irritation, tooth sensitivity, or damaged enamel, which we don’t want. To use, swish diluted hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash for 1 minute before you brush your teeth. The most common application is to whiten your teeth, since it’s a great total mouth and gum cleaner. Additionally, it also provides natural protection against gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis.
Whiten Your Teeth With Baking Soda
Another way to use hydrogen peroxide is by mixing it with baking soda to make a toothpaste. Combine 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and gently brush your teeth with the mixture to help remove plaque from your teeth. Baking soda alone has natural whitening properties, scrubbing away surface stains on your teeth since it’s mildly abrasive. Furthermore, baking soda creates an alkaline environment in your mouth, which prevents bacteria from growing. This is a great way to whiten your teeth overtime, and not overnight.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar already works as a natural antibiotic and a teeth and gum cleanser. This vinegar is able to remove stubborn stains on your teeth due to its acidity and the ability to break down plaque and other substances stuck to your teeth. By removing the stains, it is naturally whitening your teeth! Additionally, apple cider vinegar kills germs, allowing “good” bacteria to grow. Simply take your finger or toothbrush and rub the vinegar on your teeth for about a minute. Then, rinse your mouth and see results after a few uses!
