Summer Internship: How to Prepare

2017.06.05

The school year is coming to a close, you have finally landed that amazing summer internship that you have been dreaming about. You worked hard to get this internship, so now it’s time to prepare for it so you can be a star intern! Here at Faviana we know what it takes to be an intern, and it takes hard work and a good attitude. We asked our team for some words of wisdom for how to prepare for a summer internship, and for their best advice for succeeding at an internship.

Research

While there will always be more to learn, make sure you educate yourself about the company before your arrive. Find out who upper management is, and what titles they hold. Look into the history of the company, and see who their competition is. Make sure to follow your company on social media!

Wardrobe Prep

Be sure to inquire about the dress code for your company, whether it is casual or business casual you may need to add a few items to your closet. If it is a business casual office, be sure you have enough professional pants and tops to get you through the week. Also be sure to have comfy but cute shoes, as some internships involve running errands.

Plan Ahead

Make sure you know how to get to the office or location, and how long it will take you. Practice the route if you are able, and maybe even scope out places to eat in the area. Also, be sure to confirm the time you are expected so you are on time and ready to work on your first day.

Positive Attitude

One of the biggest pieces of advice that our team had for new interns was to always have a positive attitude. Internships are what you put into them, so put your best foot forward! Be positive and excited to learn, and this opportunity could turn into a exciting stepping stone for your future.

Set Goals

Napa Valley Reality

Ask yourself what you want to get out of this experience! Are you looking to learn a new skill, or perfect one you already have? You can even write down your goals and track your progress throughout, and this will give you a sense of satisfaction and completion at the end of your internship. Be sure to be realistic with your goals, and remember that everything is subject to change.

Manage Your Time

If you are interning alongside a summer job or summer classes, now is the time to start figuring out how to manage everything. Make yourself a schedule for which days are homework days, and which days you could pick up a shift. Whether you write everything into a desk calendar or just into your phone, get everything down so you have a sense of how much time you need for everything.
