Here at Faviana we really are committed to the idea that we should all be our most authentic selves while also remaining healthy and celebrating yourself. That’s why a few weeks ago we talked about healthy beauty and why it’s important making an emphasis in how harmful some beauty products can be when it comes to toxic chemicals and ingredients.
Today, we want to talk to you about when to throw out your beauty products, why it’s important even though they might be your favorites and the idea seems unthinkable. Believe us, it’s for the best, and it can even be the excuse you needed for a quick trip to your favorite beauty store! If you want to learn more, keep reading:
3 Months
Nail files: Keeping it more time than that can cause nail damage and a build-up of bacteria in the nail file, and that’s why it’s especially important that you don’t share it with anyone else.
Mascara: When mascara starts to dry out and gets clumpy, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Anything that goes directly on your eye or near it can cause infection.
Potted gel or liquid eyeliners: You should replace them after 3 months because just as mascara, you will be transferring bacteria back from your eyes to the bottle.
6 to 12 Months
Face masks: Be on the lookout for any change in color or texture, if it looks weird you should throw it out immediately since the expired chemicals and ingredients in the product can cause facial irritation and allergies.
Liquid foundation: If you see the color changing, the formula separated or it smells weird, you need a new foundation. Also, if possible, try to buy bottles with small openings where you won’t be touching the formula directly with your fingers (again, transferring bacteria) as is the case with most wide openings.
12 to 18 Months
Concealer: If your concealer is in a pan it can last a little longer, especially if you apply it with a clean brush or sponge. If you apply it with your fingers, you are probably transferring bacteria. If your concealer is in a tube that you apply with a wand, it will probably expire after a year.
2 Years
Lipstick: Fortunately, lipstick can last a long time since you are not putting your fingers on it. Try not to share it anyways, and if it starts to feel dry and changes texture and odor, throw it out.
Nail polish: After two years nail polish simply won’t go smoothly and it will start to get smudgy. Start examining it for separation or color fading after a year.
Eyeliner pencils: The good thing about pencil eyeliners is that you can sharpen them regularly wish can keep them fresh, however since they are going near your eyes you should be careful about spreading bacteria and throw out if you see the texture and scent change.
Powder cosmetics (eye shadow, blush, bronzer, highlighter): If you keep your makeup brushes clean (you should wash them at least once a week with a gentle, clarifying shampoo and then let to dry naturally) your powder products can remain bacteria-free for up to 2 years. If you see the powder become dry and flaky or has a film on top of it or a strange smell, throw it out.
2 to 3 Years
Sunscreen: Sunscreens will keep being effective for up to 3 years according to FDA regulations, and it should always include an expiration date. To read all about it, make sure to check our ultimate sunscreen guide.
Face cream: If it’s in a jar that you are introducing your fingers in, you are probably transferring bacteria. Wash your hands before applying, and if possible buy face cream that comes in a tube or pump.
Shampoo, conditioner and styling products: If water and air get inside the bottles, it can cause the formulas to break down and separate, causing the products to be useless. Make sure you always close the lids tightly.
