Pageant hair is recognized for two things: perfect curls, and voluminous style. These pageant hairstyles aren’t intended to look natural, so it gives you an opportunity to go big! In order to achieve this look, you must use the proper set of products and hair tools. Here we created a step-by-step guide on how to achieve pageant hair on your own!
What is Pageant Hair?
Pageant hair refers to the elaborate and polished hairstyles typically worn by beauty pageant contestants. These hairstyles are designed to complement the contestant's overall look and showcase their beauty, grace, and confidence.
The goal of pageant hair is to create a polished and flawless look that accentuates the contestant's features and personality, while also ensuring that the hairstyle remains secure and intact throughout the competition.
Pageant Hair Step #1: Build Up With Products
Whether you have straight or wavy hair, it’s essential to begin by using a volumizer product on your roots. Apply your favorite, then comb through the roots for an even application. Then take your next product, mousse. Apply a significant amount of this over damp hair, and comb it throughout as well. If you have extremely curly hair, you can apply a mixture of gel and smoothing, styling cream. Combing this throughout your hair will provide for an even distribution of product, and make your hair easier to work with.
Pageant Hair Step #2: Apply Heat
In order to style your hair with volume, you have to first lock it with heat. Section your hair with clips and blow-dry your hair with a large round brush and a concentration nozzle. You want to blow-dry your hair straight in order to create the big curls from scratch. Make sure to pull the roots upwards in order to build volume with the brush, and ensure each section is completely dry before moving forward.
Pageant Hair Step #3: Set With Rollers & Hairspray
As soon as your hair is dry, it’s time to set the volume with large rollers. After you blow-dry a section, immediately spray it with hairspray and brush it in so it’s evenly distributed. Then roll the small section into a roller. You can also opt for hot rollers which create easy and defined curls on its own. Use larger rollers for the top of the hair to preserve volume, and smaller rollers towards the bottom. The curls will last longer based upon how long the curlers are left in the hair. You can leave them in anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours!
Pageant Hair Step #4: Teasing
To create additional volume, it’s essential to tease. Remove the rollers and lightly spray with a cooled hairspray. Then, start by teasing the roots of your hair with a round brush for maximum volume. Make sure that you tease the underside of the hair and use the brush over the top to smooth the hair out to complete the volumized effect. Be careful not to brush out the curls in order to keep the defined style!
Pageant Hair Step #5: Style the Hair
Last but not least, it’s time to style the hair. Here you have an array of options. You can keep the hair down, create a bump at the crown, pin half the hair up, or do a side ponytail. Traditionally, and the easiest style to achieve, is just wearing those voluminous locks down. Once you decide on your final style, spray everywhere with hairspray from 8-10 inches away. Now you’re ready to take the stage!
